Where India stands at the end of Ireland Match ?

M Chinnaswamy stadium, Bangalore has produced 4 amazing matches in this world cup so far.
· Australia could not chase 227 against Indians in warm up match.
· England and India scored 338 in both innings and ensured a Tie.
· Ireland chased down 328 with 5 balls to spare against England for a win.
· India chased down 208 with 4 overs to spare, against Ireland.

Is there any pattern to the way in which the wicket played in these matches? First and last match had a pattern, wherein the wicket was helping the slow bowlers. Indians crossed the line against Ireland, whereas Aussies could not do it against Indian bowling attack.

Similarly, 2nd and 3rd match had a pattern, where the wicket remained intact for both the innings, infact got better in the second innings. Ireland crossed the line against England, whereas England could only equal the effort of the Indians.

I want to drive home the point that Dhoni pushes his team to be on top, given the toughness of situation at hand. In a world cup game, any opposition is tough, or else there wouldn’t be a scenario, where Minnows rule over champion’s side on a given day. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Australia, England have all faced it in the past. ‘Win the toss and bat first’ should always be the formula to be successful, especially when your team is packed with 7 batsmen. But then Dhoni pretty well understood that Ireland match could be a platform where his batting power could be put under pressure for a run chase. It paid rich dividends, as Irish fielders projected 207 as something close to 240 and MS Dhoni also had words of praise for Ireland fielding at post match interview.

At the end of the day, nothing lost, as Indian bowling was also tested this time bowling first. Piyush Chawla had another bad day at the office. Surprisingly Yuvraj’s bowling spell was more than satisfying, as it does a world of good to his confidence about his place in the side, for starters and spill over benefit that it has in his batting. He remained not out and saw the team through during a tight run chase. He was helped at the other end, initially by Dhoni, who built an awesome partnership and later by Yusuf Pathan, who made a joke of the situation the team was pushed into, by Irish team.

Yusuf Pathan’s innings told a lot about the state of mind he is in. It’s really crucial that he plays fearless and at the same time, ensure that he takes the team across the border. He just cannot have a bad day in this world cup, as he might be in similar situation very few times and at most important stage of the world cup and be it any opponents. Harbhajan and Zaheer would become more crucial to serve the partner role for Yusuf in those crunch situations. Of course, this situation would come if the batting collapse happens during a run chase. If only Ireland made our entire 7 batsmen to bat, there are other teams, who would push the button more and bring Bhajji and Zak out along with Yusuf and we should not collapse there.

Hats off to Yuvi for achieving a feat, which is unique for any left arm spinner in a world cup. 5 wickets and 50 plus runs scored by a left arm spinner in same match have happened for the first time in a world cup. No doubt Dhoni backs his men, but I feel he does it with the intention of providing fair chance before anybody is judged. Yuvraj has proven track record in the past to play demolition innings. Dhoni is shaping up Yuvi to be a threat again. Somewhere, Dhoni misses Praveen kumar, who is a street smart bowler and one who could bowl really well in death overs. In his absence, Munaf is seen as a guy, who could fit in that space.

India Netherlands match is going to be another test platform. My guess is that Ashwin and Nehra would play their first match in the world cup. If we all know Sachin well, I don’t think so, he would take rest, as he has never done it in world cups. To support that statement, Sachin has taken enough rest in the recent past to miss any game in the world cup. If Raina is part of the plan, Netherlands match is one place, where he might get a chance to play. Hardly that scenario would happen. Indians are approaching this world cup in a better mindset so far.

Go India Go.

Regards,
Prashy.

  1. @ Parshy: Yet another Classic match summary...

Enough of Experiments as far as INDIA is concerned. Now our primary aim is to reach top spot and the only way is to ensure that is to make maximum out of the available. INDIA vs South Africa will be the decider for the top spot. so no more slip ups. Ireland were good with ball as well as in the field. Our spinners are not trying hard, we cannot rely only on part time spinners come on what is Harbhajan and Piyush doing. May be Dhoni might rope in ashwin in next match. Batting as never been a worry so concern is still on the field and Ball. Hope we peak in right time so as to set claim on the Trophy.

  2. @Venkat - Where did we slip up, first of all ? We tied against England and won three matches. Believe me, we dont have world class bowlers packed in our side. Bhajji and Zaheer are world class performers no doubt. Zaheer is amongst the wickets for sure, but then opponents are not taking chance against Bhajji, hence he is not amongst wickets. Now that Ashish Nehra is in the side, Ashwin is yet to play a match and Piyush gaining confidence, as captain is backing him, we are in the right track.

One cannot crib about the fact about players who are picked in the squad and comment harsh on them. Dhoni knows to pat them and make them perform at world stage. Fans are keen on Ashwin to be fit into eleven. But then each person plays for a specific role assigned. Dhoni has mentioned in the pre match interview - 'Ashwin is mentally strong and he can come in and perform at highest level against any opponent'. What a compliment for Ashwin. This could be read in two ways - 1. Dhoni backs Piyush and its a statement concerning petty politics. 2. Chawla is not that much mentally strong and he needs to be backed up and hence Dhoni does that. First statement is thinking negative and second statement is thinking positive.

You make your statement having a genuine interest in Ashwin playing the side. Think like this, Piyush is backed by Dhoni, because he picked 4 wickets in warm up match. So, he is a potential match winner for us. Its tough to leave aside personal favoritism and then look into the issue, as we all want Ashwin to play soon. But then he has to wait for his chance, thats the way it is. All this is not done at the cost of us losing the match. So, we got to back Dhoni here.

  3. @ Prashy:

You misunderstood what i tried to say. I am keen on seeing India top the group for which run rate is a crucial factor. Ashwin and Piyush, the debate has been an ongoing saga as far as forums are concerned. Both Players have their own Pro's and Cons. Ashwin was crucial member of CSK dream run in 2010. Ashwin has been confined to INDIA whereas Piyush has been a very good performer in English County. Hence he has been given chance. No doubt both are excellent professionals. Piyush has been out of Intl. Cricket for a while so it takes some time to settle. Hope he does better agaisnt South Africa and West Indies. But one thing is sure Ashwin will certainly get one chance, Who Knows that might even be Finals (if i am right, Ajantha Mendis was also unleashed in Asia cup Finals i guess). Dhoni Knows one thing for sure, he has 3-4 part time bowlers who can change the shape of the game on their day (Sehwag, Yuvraj, Pathan, Raina). So lets wait and watch. You misunderstood what i tried to say. I am keen on seeing India top the group for which run rate is a crucial factor.

  4. @Venkat - I agree with Ashwin coming in crucial matches and acting as surprise package. Even Piyush played only in two finals against Australia in commonwealth bank series 2008. Dhoni beleives in these bold moves and make the opposition take a back seat. Who knows, Ashwin is reserved for such act.

My comments agisnt you has also got to do with the negative vibes that's running amongst fans concerning Dhoni and India team. Just wanted to pen down all those too. Its a healthy discussion and I do learn from comments posted on my posts. Let the comments pour from you as usual. :-)

  5. as usual a good summary post match...mentioning my views pointwise:-
1.Praveen Kumar is sorely missed(he just like Ian Harvey for Australia) is a street smart bowler who can bowl at the death well...now that he is not there,Dhoni is grooming Munaf(as we saw earlier in that England match,Munaf did well to recover after Shehzad hit that six)...he can try these only in the group matches...if am right,Dhoni did the same with Joginder Sharma in that 2007 T20 WC which we won...good decision, backing him thoroughly.
2.Piyush Chawla:-no man can be judged just after one horrendous outing, deserved another chance...did not matter how he performed cos before these matches in India he had never played in India,so must be given fair chances.
3.Yuvraj Singh is gaining momentum slowly but steadily...he played well against England, did well here too against the powerful minnows under challenging situations...hope that he takes enough confidence out of this and carries on!!!
