Indian World cup squad announced - An Outlook

People who would have put their heads together to come up with their own Squad for the forthcoming world cup, would have got most of their predictions spot on, as close to 11 players pick themselves for the squad. Sachin, Sehwag, Gambhir, Yuvraj, Raina, Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, R Ashwin, Nehra and Kohli should have been in the minds of Indian fans, as these guys had a fantastic 2010.

Gambhir and Kohli in particular, showed tremendous consistency in 2010 and undoubtedly these two lead the batting team hands down. Yuvraj is picked, taking into consideration his vast ODI experience. He could be considered for Dhoni, as what Bevan was for Steve Waugh. Raina and Dhoni are middle order for us, especially during the crucial run chases that India would face in world cup 2011. Their on-field and off-field partnership would go a long way in successfully chasing our dream. Sehwag and Sachin would ensure that we always have a steady start for late onslaught, be it setting the target or chasing down one.

Zaheer, Nehra, Harbhajan, Ashwin were sure picks in the minds of people too, as these are the front line bowlers in the squad. Ashwin's performance at IPL has earned him a place as frontline spinner along with Bhajji. His run-containing abilities and wicket-taking abilities were for everyone to see during the IPL. During the Newzealand ODI series too, he was consistent. He sure would have learned lot of tricks of Offspin bowling, having shared the dressing room with Muthaiah Muralidharan during IPL. Ofcourse Bhajji could be considered as a Bowling all rounder.

I am not sure as to who was pipped out due to Yusuf pathan's inclusion. Is it Rohit Sharma or Ravindra Jadeja ? I feel Rohit Sharma could not be fitted in the squad as impact of Yusuf would be more for the opponents than a Rohit Sharma. I guess Piyush Chawla sidekicked Ravindra Jadeja out. Both turn the ball away from a right hand batsmen and during the grooming phase, both did not shine too much with the bat. Piyush Chawla's heroics in two finals against aussies in 2008 commonwealth bank series in Australia comes to our mind now. Rohit Sharma and Jadeja would be very upset, knowing that they are not part of the squad.

Ishant and Sreesanth, frontline bowlers in the Indian test side, would be shattered having missed the bus. Sreesanth always hits the negative side of thought process, cause he never projected that he is maturing in international cricket. He does pick wickets, but then Praveen kumar silently sneaked into the squad for his street smartness. Ishant is raw and erratic, but then Munaf is a wicket taker and his man of the match performance against RSA in last ODI in South africa only ensured that he is in form and can be considered as third seamer along with Praveen in playing eleven, after Zaheer and Nehra.

Question pops up in our minds whether its a good mix of experience and youngsters ? In Batting department - Sachin, Sehwag, Yuvraj, Dhoni have prior world cup experience whereas Gambhir, Raina, Yusuf, Kohli play their first big cup and can be categorised as youngsters. In bowling department - Zaheer, Nehra, Bhajji are the three bowlers with prior world cup experience. Praveen, Munaf, Ashwin, Chawla can be proud of their place in the squad as they have truly earned it. '7 experienced and 8 youngsters' Truly selectors have injected young blood more.

I am more of a person who would put myself into Selector's shoes as to convince people who raise questions. Having said that, I am not able to understand why there is no back-up wicket keeper at all in the side. Would Robin Uthappa have answered that question. I can only think of him instead of Piyush Chawla. But subcontinent conditions would have pushed the think tank to go in for three spinners. It does make sense that way. In the previous world cups, there was atleast another player, who could be a make-shift keeper.

Is our Indian squad an average fielding side or excellent fielding side ? Raina, Kohli, Yusuf and Piyush are exceptional on field. Yuvraj, Bhajji, Ashwin and Gambhir are good outfielders. Zaheer and Nehra has to be quick in the boundary lines. Munaf and Praveen kumar should not get lost once they complete the six balls of an over. Sachin and Sehwag are the seniors who need to be hidden in the field. Having said that, we would find these two inside the dressing room mostly when we bowl. We have the capacity to win matches solely by our fielding efforts. We may not be consistent there like Aussies or South africans, but then lets keep our fingers crossed.
Having made a thorough analysis of the squad, I wish somehow Rohit Sharma gets a RAC booking confirmed in the last minute. :-)
Regards,
Prashy.

  1. Good one Prashant,
A few things came to my mind -
    1) Is there an ICC rule that the squad should include 15 players only? In these days of tight schedules & frequent injuries, 16 players might be a good bet(which gives scope for 1 additional Wkt keeper, 2 additional batsmen & bowlers each)
    2) If they really wanted an additional spinner, why was Pragyan Ojha sidelined? I felt he was a better bet. A left Arm off spinner is normally more accurate than a Right Arm leg spinner. They say Piyush can bat, but i dont remember him being consistant with the bat in Internationals
    3) What if Dhoni gets injured? There is no Dravid in the side to Keep wickets!
    4) Has Dhoni finally givenup on his pet - Ravindra Jadeja? Better late than never, i guess. Jadeja is bloody lucky to be around for so long. For a No.6 batsman, his strike rate is 77. Even Bhajji has a better strike rate above 80!. Interestingly only Jadeja & Rohit are the only 2 batsmen probables who had a strike rate of less than 80. I guess Dhoni went thru the stats before selections & decided to drop both of them !! :-))

  2. good one bro...even I had Robin Uthappa/Dinesh Karthik in mind(Dinesh Karthik had batted well in that Sachin's 200 series against South Africa whereas Uthappa had been inconsistent in the counties)...expected Ojha to pip over Piyush but its good considering the fact that Piyush can bat a bit...hope and pray that Dhoni is fit throughout the WC...yeah,Dravid will be sorely missed!!!

  3. @Newin - 16 member squad could be the order of the day mate, but its one of the old school of thought which was never questioned.
I did not feel Pragyan Ojha would make it, as he is more looked for Test scheme of things. Infact he was part of T-20 world cup, but failed to impress as he relies on tossing the deliveries and trying to beat the batsmen in air. Piyush is quicker through the air and comes in the team as run containing bowler as Bhajji and Ashwin are both wicket taking bowlers, ofcourse on paper. I am not talking about situation specific approach here. This would have pushed for Piyush ahead of Ojha.
I heard Kohli might chip in with the wicket keeping gloves, but then I strongly wish for Dhoni's fitness throught out the world cup.
I agree, lots of thinking has gone in dropping Rohit Sharma and Jadeja. No emotional support for any player. In these two cases, enough chances were provided. As captain Dhoni was spot on. As Chief selector, Srikanth was also spot on as he backed Dhoni in all possible ways. This is one collective decision and it shows cause there is no big fuss from the critics.

  4. Hi Prashy,

Nice article, squad strength's and weakness were put up in right way. Indian Fielding of course has drastically improved when compared to previous tournaments but still few of our players(playing 11) are not even safe hands. Rohit sharma would have been a cover for sachin on field but who will field on for sachin on field now. There are few concerns on fitness of players at the moment as sachin, Gambhir, sehwag and praveen kumar all injured and hope they recover in time for world cup preparatory. But the ultimate hope is that Some how India should avoid RSA and Aussies in Quarters as well as Semi's. Hail Men in Blues.

  5. Hi Prasnath

Good analysis. Can u really say Yuvi is as good as Bevan, who was far more consistent and dependable? Bowling still continues to be a shaky area. We don't have one devastating bowler who can make batsmen jittery. Fielding is good, but by no means great enough to win us matches. Overall, though we are in a winning streak, we don't have that invincibility of the Windies of the 80's or the Aussies of the 90's. - Babu Rao

  6. @Babu - Hey Babu, thanks for sharing your views. I totally agree with you regarding the bowling being very shaky. But then I get a feeling that most of the teams go into this world cup not projecting themselves as Invincibles. Correct me if I am wrong. On top of it, we are not playing the tournament in seaming conditions, rather we are playing in subcontinent conditions, where it will make world class bowlers look ordinary. Its Batsmen's paradise. Best example is 1996 world cup where Kalu and Sanath teared bowling apart and Sachin did the same for India. Our Winning streak actually places us as favorites.
Regarding Yuvraj, somehow I feel that Dhoni uses similar tactics to satisfy Yuvraj's ego, constantly stating that he is the match winner for us and his experience would take us through and all that. Read his comparison with Bevan in similar manner. But then I do agree with you that Bevan is far more consistent and dependable.

  7. @Venkat - Hi Abhi, thanks for sharing your views and to follow my blog. :-) Regarding the fitness, I dont see Sachin, Sehwag and others surviving the world cup as the schedules allow good enough breaks between the matches. If we have to win the world cup, we should not lose even a single match. Lets put it that way and end.

  8. Hi Prashy, I totally agree with you. But when you see our top/ middle order batsmen performances in recent one day series against SA....its dismal! I hate/ boils up with these chunky-funky batsmen play. When Yousuf can play 100 odd runs at 7-8 wickets down...in pressure, why not our top/ middle order?! I have full doubts on getting into finals of world cup...off-course Sachin, Sehwag & Gambhir will join the party. Still I feel sorry for such bad batting performances in last two matches...shame on us.

I saw many times losing matches due to bad batting performances and always we crib about bad/poor bowling line up. Now lets watch, what our dream team (E&Y...experience & young)will do in WC...lets cheer them! But as you said lack of backup wicket keeper will be an lacuna in the squad. If either of Parthiv/ Karthik/ Rohit have been included, it would be good (they can bat/ wk-keeping/ bowl as well). I feel sad for Rohit sharma, but again its a big question of playing 11. Its never ending debate...so will catch you later/ again. Wishes Venu

  9. @Venu - There is no need to panic about this batting line up, as the tournament is going to happen in Subcontinent conditions and most of the matches, I dont see us exposing the bowlers during our batting. Icing on the cake is Yusuf Pathan thrashing the bowlers even in South african conditions. He can win matches single handedly and now Dhoni can plan run chases really well as there should be someone who just provides support to Pathan at the other end.

I am also foreseeing a scenario where Yuvraj or Raina might be dropped for some match as Yusuf would play each and every match without fail, given his form and consistency. Sachin, Sehwag, Gambhir, Yusuf, Dhoni, Kohli seems to be piority for 11. But then this world cup is going to be full of surprise moves by Dhoni. Lets wait and watch.

  10. Hey Prashanth,
Undoubtedly the selectors have picked a mix of yputh and experience. But the key question is picking the playing eleven out of all good fifteen. It will be a question in the mind of the captain and coach to pick the best middle order as all have proven track revord in 2010.
As much as raina has proved himself, I doubt his place I'm playing eleven against kohli, yuvi unless one of them fails miserably. Thereforehis inclusion itself is redundant to a certain extent. Against him we could have picked a bowling all rounder as a stop gap arrangement.
But all in all seems to be a good side and is by the book.
The role of mentors is very crucial both to boost the morale during low times and to keep them grounded during high profile matches.
We should avoid a repetition of 2003 when the side was overcharged in finals thereby making the sotuation out of hand. Sachin, sehwag in particular should look into this with Gary.

This seems to be a good chance for dhoni to finish what ganguly came close to accomplishing in 2003.

  11. @Vaibhav - I agree man. Particularly I go with you, when you mentioned the mentor's role during high profile matches. To this, I feel Dhoni's mental frame would really play a pivotal role cause he is not a guy who will exhibit emotions like the way Ganguly did it in the finals. We have a lesson in the past from which we could learn and glad that few members are still there from that group. :)

  12. Could'nt agree with you more. Like the article. I dont think Yuvraj though is gonna make that much of an impact. He is past his prime and is on his way out. But watch out for Kohli and lets not forget the fireworks YP brings in death overs. I would probably this is the most balanced side we have come up with. oh btw Sree made the squad. We need jokers/characters within the team even if they push the ethics line too forward. Makes for interesting television and that much extra juice for the news channels. Something for them to chew on!

  13. @Santosh - As far as Yuvi is concerned, Dhoni is banking on him to have a good match, as he can make opponents clueless with his skills. and regarding Sreesanth, I could not agree with you more as Dhoni and seniors might have a close eye on this guy, since he might unnecessarily push opponents too much and make us look bad. It has happened in the past and he has not matured to correct himself.
