South Africa choked India after Sachin, Sehwag and Gambhir’s brilliance.

Batting Brilliance followed by batting disaster ensured a South African win. We can always pinpoint Ashish Nehra’s last over, Munaf patel’s 14 run over (his 10th), Zaheer’s 15 run over (his 9th) as reasons for losing the match. But ideally we lost the match in our first innings itself, when we lost 9 wickets scoring 29 runs only, after scoring 267 for 1 at the end of 40 overs. The top order batted like a dream and Middle & Lower order batted like a nightmare. Sehwag and Gambhir missed out on their Individual tons too, as they both had a good chance of achieving that. How at the end of the match, one wished either Gambhir or Sehwag to achieve that feet, because that alone would have made sure that we consume all 50 overs.

Dhoni has slammed in press conference that, batsmen should stop playing cricket for the crowd, as it’s not about scoring sixes and four without getting their eye in. Also South Africans have Dale Steyn, who specifically was brought in to disrupt the run flow. Even Greame Smith would have been taken aback when he looked at the batting collapse of Indians. I guess Dhoni and Gary Kirsten have to re think strategies on when to pick the third power play, as time and again, it’s leading us into a scenario of merely losing wickets without any runs added. At least, the approach of batsmen during the same should undergo a change, if they stick to the same formula. Or Sachin should be a silent partner in the 3rd power play rather than playing aggressor role.

Coming to blistering start provided by Sachin and Sehwag, it was a treat to the eye when Sachin hooked Dale Steyn over deep square leg boundary for a six. Sehwag was simply outstanding with his fierce cuts, Cover drives on the up, and Straight drives off Morkel. Whatever fear that South Africans had in connection with a rollicking start from Sachin and Sehwag’s bat, it all came true and none of their plans seemed to work. Even the South Africans in the crowd stood and applauded as Sachin and Viru matched or bettered shot for shot.

Gambhir was classy yet again with his over extra cover shots for spinners. The way in which he paced his innings spoke volumes of the form he is in. Just when he tried to hit the accelerator button, he lost his wicket and that was closed door for Indians. It was so disheartening to see the lower order trying to smash the likes of Steyn and Morkel, but all they had to do was play run a ball and ensure that our score reaches 310 to 320. Dhoni was at the other end, watching the irresponsible men walk in and walk out.

When we started to Bowl, Dhoni awaited Zaheer’s magic against Smith. It got delayed, as Zaheer has to bowl five overs in the spell to achieve that. Ashish Nehra started well with Zaheer, but then he consistently provided two consecutive boundary balls at various stages. Munaf, the fastest spinner in the playing eleven, kept batsmen tight but for his last over, where service was required the most. Harbhajan was the pick of the bowler, but he could have gone and snatched the ball from Dhoni to complete his spell and sent a message to Robin Petersen as to who the boss was. At this time, I remember Sachin snatching the ball from Azharrudin in the famous Hero cup and bowled the historical last over.

The batting collapse and mediocre bowling performance of Munaf & Nehra cost us the match. Fielding cannot remain as an excuse, as the elimination stage is fast approaching and players have to raise bars to hit the finishing line as a team. It was one bad day at office with respect to batting and we should not repeat the mistake.

To end this post on a high, Will Zaheer, Bhajji, Sreesanth and Ashwin make the winning combination for us in the remaining part of the tournament?

Regards,
Prashy.

  1. I feel pity for Ashwin.. he is one of the brilliant bowler in current form .. Doni can ideally start with zaheer and ashwin, we have seen the brilliant performance from Ashwin in the IPL, He delivered the goods for doni wit the new ball. when doni can trust him in IPL, then y not here again, i wish he plays against WI in his home ground at least. Wake up Mahi, we dont want to miss out this time!!!!!!!!!!

  2. We dont want Ashwin to be a surprise package only in IPL, Give a chance to him on a big stage.. for sure he is better than PC any given day....

  3. @Harish - I could not agree with you more. Its high time that he gets a chance. Chennai do helps the spinners as the ball turns and bounce in the wicket. England South Africa match was perfect example of how the wicket plays.

I guess he had planned him as surprise package, but then I personally feel its no more a surprise for anybody. Raina also would get a chance and Yusuf might sit out. We should raise the level of game no doubt.

  4. LOL @ Munaf being the fastest spinner.... reality though... his fielding was more worrying to me as South Africans easily picked up twos against him but didn't challenge Kohli or Raina.
Why can't we take the batting powerplay just after the bowling powerplay if situation warrant? In this game we were actually going in great momentum @8 rpo so ideally with Sehwag and Sachin in full swing we wud have opted for it. And i don't like dhoni's idea of sending Pathan in the powerplay. He doesn't need a powerplay to go over the ropes. He plays even the normal overs as a powerplay. I ideally feel PP are for those who cannot clear the rope easily like Gambhir, Kohli etc.
Hope we learn our mistakes soon and come back with a bang against West Indies! Hope to see Ashwin with the new ball against Chris Gayle :)

  5. @Akila - Thanks for your comments. Nice option for 3rd powerplay. Dhoni and thinking tank should set a trend for 3rd Powerplay no doubt. But then considering 3rd powerplay eats up wickets, match would be over too early if Sachin and Sehwag are consumed. Ofcourse I am saying this in lighter sense.

We are taking the powerplay 3 to ensure that the ball is hard enough to pierce gaps. After 30 odd overs, umpires change the ball and strategy is to cash in on that. An argument against Dhoni is that, he fiddles with the batting order too much. But then he is sticking to the floating nature of his batting unit. Believe me, that factor has ensured that Yuvraj is back in form for this world cup. Yusuf Pathan is a Lottery for any team.

Another batting collapse cannot happen in future, cause the intention is to back up the weakness of our bowling unit. Fielding have to improve or atleast ensure that you convert the chances come your way, forget even half chances. Dhoni has to take care of right men at right places.

I would like your view point on Sreesanth to be brought back though........

  6. Sreeshant is not a fit at all... and more over I felt that Dhoni should have played the last 3 overs like a test match by taking singles and exposing No10 and No11 to Dale Steyn. Instead he should have take the strike and tried to score some boundaries of the remaining balls. I agree with you that Indians lost the match in the first innings by sending SA on a higher note to the dressing room having restricting India to 297 where in they could have ended up with somewhere near 350 with the kind of foundation they had

  7. @Phanish - Drawing a scenario from test cricket and applying it in ODI can hit the batting team at any stage. Till 40 overs, we batted as if its a T-20 game. Powerplay 3 ensured that we bundled out as if we all decided that number of runs scored already was enough. Very carefree shots to project that we are on top. Steyn saw a glimmer of hope and wiped our tail in no time.

I agree that Dhoni could have played those singles, but then it was a shock for everybody that we got all out, with 2 overs to be played. Now that it has happened in the group stage itself, we will not be complacent again. Let the team get their combination right and fit and compete on a better scale in forthcoming matches.

  8. Prashy.. this is what international cricket is all about. These guys would have played so much cricket that they would have seen such situations in the past and they should have got the lesson as to what to do in those situations. So Dhoni should have got that as soon as Bajji got out. He should have ensured that no one else other than him will take the responsibility to face the remaining balls and ensure that India reach a respectable score. Not that 297 is not a respectable score, but with the amount of ground work done by Sachin and Co, we should have ensured that we get more.

I agree with you with regards to Carefree shots and getting out. I guess Gary would have told the the tail as to what is expected of them. I feel that they are not kids to be told as they have to get these things from within and without saying.

  9. @Prashy: Nice article...

Gambhir, Sehwag, Sachin did well with their bat. It was a similar type of batting collapse like Sri Lanka which lost 6 odd wickets for 50 runs, Still the bat till the last ball of innings. When you go to bat the aim should be to bat till last ball of the innings. This fundamental thing was forgotten by our batsmen. Power play doesn't mean 6's and 4's, When the run rate is going steady what is the use of trying to hit over the rope in each and every ball. Loosing 9 wickets for 28 runs in 9 overs was a disaster and there only we lost the match. It is so easy to blame bowlers but true blame is on the batsmen.

If 1 over left, less than 15 runs to win with 3 wickets in hand, Any day its favorable to bowlers and at the same time it is of course a get able target. Here Any bowler would try to defend and All batsmen would try to hit all around the field. Nehra has always been a good bowler in final spell so he was given a chance. Its very easy to say that had Bhajji, ashwin etc had bowled we would have won. So no blame game, unfortunately it was a bad day for Nehra.

    13 runs of 6 balls:

    1st ball: Edge and 4
    now 9 of 5
2nd ball: Batsmen is confident now tries hard and its a 6.
    now 3 of 4
3rd ball: Bowler terribly demoralized and crowed booing the bowler naturally tries hard But good running b/w the wickets 2 runs.
    1 of 3
4th ball: its Game over peterson hits a 4.

    The above is true case...

  10. what would be the case if (Even though i don't believe in IF's and But's in Sports)the last over had been this way.

19.1: Peterson tries hard but a dot ball.

    19.2 been a couple.

the batting team requires 9 of 4. Here the pressure will be more on the batsmen than bowlers. The pendulum would swung on any side. Both teams yet would take chances.

Even if harbhajan or whoever bowled the case is very simple the batsmen would try hard to get runs. So we should decide whats next. Till now we were happy that our batting has been super strong but Match agaisnt South Africa showcased the hidden vulnerability in batting, So all round display is a must in next game so as to face New zealand or pakistan in QF. But one more slip up would be death knell because we might have to face Sri Lanka or Australia which i never wanted to happen...

    All Hail Men in Blues...

  11. @venkat - Nice way of stepping into the shoes of Peterson and Nehra with your two scenarios. Just to be harsh on Nehra, he could have tried a bouncer, a toe crusher, yorkers, sometimes low full tosses helps too. Those 4 deliveries, he did not show much variety and Peterson could predict what was coming from second delivery onwards.

Be it any team, we have got no choice but to beat them going forward. Its a wake up call from our batting unit too, as you rightly pointed out. I wish India Pakistan final.

  12. @ Prashy:-as usual good observations but my suggestions to Dhoni would be like this:-
1.Open the bowling with Ashwin and Zaheer.
2.Take the batting powerplay when a wicket falls in the overs between 18-28,send Yusuf Pathan then for he would disrupt the opposition thinktank.
3.With respect to fielding, our fielding was much better in the last match...hope they get inspired to field better cos matches are won with the invisible hand that cannot prove its mastery with the bat or its wizardry with the ball.
4.Let the bowling powerplay not be taken in the 11th over...why not between overs 15-25 or 34-39 for a change...during the bowling powerplay Zaheer/Ashwin/Bhajji alone should bowl!!!
5.India should concentrate on getting singles and twos, our middle order was pathetic against England and SouthAfrica.

  13. @MDR - Good ones. Though, I am not for the bowling power play to be taken having some set of overs in mind. If there are two new batsmen at the crease, or a new batsmen alongwith not so in-form batsmen, then pick it up. Ideally it should end before 25 overs or max before 30 overs.

All the 7 batsmen are big boundary scorers, as far as singles and twos are concerned, Dhoni would rely on himself, Yuvi, Kohli and Gambhir to do the needful.
