War Ended - Peace Talks on

India Pakistan encounter would always be associated with WAR without shooting. But then in World cups, Indians have held an upper hand and margin of victories would always be on a better scale than expected. ICC T-20 world cup 2007, being an exception to it. 1992, we won by 43 runs. 1996, we beat them by 39 runs, 1999 we beat them by 47 runs, 2003 by 6 wickets and 3 overs to spare. And lastly 2011, by 30 runs. This would summarize the fact that Pakistan always feel much more pressurized than Indian in a world cup encounter. Not to forget Sachin’s man of the match performances in three out of those 5 encounters.

Considering this world cup in particular, Pakistan projected their Bowling supremacy in almost all the matches that they played, but for last 5 overs against New Zealand. Australia were bowled out for 176 in last league match, West Indies were bowled out for 112 in Quarter final match. Sri Lanka could not chase 260 in their own backyard against the same attack.

Indian Batsmen played with a plan to post a huge total. It backfired as Wahab, Afridi and Ajmal were outstanding with the ball, but Umar Gul over compensated with a mediocre performance. Hafeez was allowed to bowl a decent spell, as we kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Losing Yuvraj so cheaply gave them such an upper hand, that Sachin and Dhoni had to settle for second level score as target to be achieved for Pakistanis. Raina helped the cause with another sensible batting display, this time setting the target. Gambhir did his own grave when he got stumped. He was looking all set for another big score.

Sachin would have felt so embarrassed to receive the man of the match trophy for the kind of innings that he played. Having said that, his mere presence in the middle suggested that, we were fighting against the odds of Pakistan, making a mockery of the match with a comprehensive win against us. Pakistan’s fielding was always bad throughout the tournament, Kamran Akmal’s effort behind the stumps were always ordinary. Surprisingly it remained in the same manner in semi final match too. I would not say we crawled to 260; rather we were guided by Raina’s sensible knock to 260. Wahab’s effort with the ball ensured that Pakistan’s bowling brilliance stayed put in semi finals also. He was quick and accurate to surprise Sehwag and Dhoni, as we all know the bat speed of the two batsmen under consideration.

Hafeez is Mr. Captain’s support. Every match, Afridi would throw the ball to him and his bowling success transformed nicely into his batting brilliance. Kamran Akmal has also got a wide range of shots in his kitty and they started the chase with utmost ease. Dhoni is wonderful in mixing his bowlers and he switched his three fast bowlers end to end until the first break through arrived. Kamran Akmal was consumed by Zaheer. Hafeez played a horrendous shot to get out cheaply. He tried to scoop the ball for scoring a single and paid the penalty. Azad Shafiq is a promising lad and his calmness sent an assurance to the dressing room. Yuvi striked gold twice with Shafiq and Younis Khan's wicket.

Younis Khan’s and Misbah’s role are clearly designed by the team management. One cannot blame them for playing the way they both did. If it would have clicked, it would have set the platform for Umar Akmal, Afridi and Razzaq to finish the game for them. But then, we picked up these three wickets easily and ensured Misbah fought for a lost cause yet again. Bhajji picked up two crucial wickets in Umar Akmal and Afridi, who are match winners on any day.

Technically speaking, Pakistan made a huge blunder to push the 3rd power play way till the end. In his post match interview, Afridi said he was waiting for Bhajji to finish his spell and then he would take the power play. Hardly had he known that he played right into the hands of Dhoni, who would definitely have wanted Bhajji to finish the spell without field restrictions. Nehra was undoubtedly the pick of the bowlers with his great Yorkers at the death. Munaf and Zaheer backed him up with impressive spells. Yuvraj is playing as a fifth bowler itself and he was fearless to toss the ball to create opportunities for Dhoni and team India. Clinical bowling performance won the match for us.

India is one step away from lifting the trophy. Let’s all watch Dhoni handing the trophy to Sachin, Yuvraj receiving the man of the series award and revealing the Special Person, Team India going around stadium for a victory lap and all of us joining in the celebration in our own way.

Go India Go,

Regards,

Prashy.

  1. Teams that are desperate to climb higher will find a way to win and that is exactly what happened to Team India. Scrappy innings from the master has he could not pick the ball coming out of Ajmal's hand (wonderful bowler). The ball gambhir got out was bowled wide from the grease (outside the grease), surprised how they did not call that to be a no-ball. The team which took catches, which fielded well and played the first power play well won the match. It is eerie to think that Shewag's burst and the lead of 29 runs during the first power play when compared to what pakistan scored is the difference in this match. Go India Go. They got to tidy up some lose ends against SL and time to bring back Ashwin. Nothing against Nehra, he did what the team expected out of him.

  2. @Prashy: Nice article...One of the flashing moments of cricket...Only Match which was missing in last world cup...

First of all My hearty Congrats to men in blues and Support Staff. At start we looked dominant with bat and started off. Sehwag or Lightning this is how first 3-4 overs were described. I missed India Innings unfortunately. Sachin as usual he made his mark. But is INDIAN Batting still vulnerable to swing and variety spin. If Yes, Then we need to act quick and No, then Indian Batsmen should make sure they go behind bowlers in easier manner. Raina has been good in knock out stages, he duly performed his duty to make sure India reaches the needed runs on board. Since we got enough we don't have to discuss much on it because any day any team will collapse to PAKISTAN BOWLING ATTACK. In my words Only team in the world to just rely on one dimension and go out to win is Pakistan. Their Bowling department is undoubtedly best in the world. They were the pioneers in bringing Reverse Swing (Sarfaraz Nawaz) DOOSRA (Saqlain Mushtaq) and many more. So happy that we did well agaisnt them.

Coming to the bowling department of Men in Blues. Owing to the fact that Pakistan in general not a great side when it comes to chase, Our bowlers piled pressure right from the beginning. Nehra, Zaki, Munaf did well to make sure runs are not conceded. Tight overs by spinners and attacking fielding made it look easier for captain because at one stage even singles were difficult for Pakistani batsmen. Credit to Yuvi, Kohli, Raina, Gambhir and Co. Tight fielding fire point throws made it bit easy. So overall India Pakistan upper hand India.

Its really hard to digest that People simply criticizing Nehra for one bad over. yesterday the way he bowled was truly a hit on everyone's face who bashed Nehra. He is undoubtedly our best strike bowling partner. He deserves credit and Pat from all fans for his performance yesterday.

As a Staunch Cricket fan and Men in blues supporter World cup waits for the team which beat Australia and INDIA will be in hot pursuit for lifting this coveted trophy.
So end of the story enjoy next days as a fan and come back with vigor to support men in blues for the trophy.

  3. Babu's Comments: After a long time, a wonderful movie with 22 brilliant artists delivering breathtaking performance. I especially loved the scene where Mr. Umar Gul went on feeding Mr.Shewag on his leg stump. And also the scene where Mr.Gul was asked to bowl over number 49 after he was repeatedly butchered. The scenes where Pak batsmen got out to deliveries which a kid of 5 could play in his sleep, were so realistic. I look forward to the release of another blockbuster on Saturday. Let's watch Malinga feed Yuvi with over-pitched deliveries. And Murali walking out dejectedly with woeful bowling figures. It's going to be real fun folks.

  4. @Babu - Nice analogy. The movie on Saturday would be released world wide and especially Indians and Lankans would watch it, as the common language is Cricket. :-)

  5. @Prashy, I completely agree with you with regards to the secondary target being set by Indians when they constantly kept loosing wickets. Oh boy, the little master had 4 lives. All those were dolly's and never difficult ones. I guess Pakistanis were in a lot of pressure and I guess that caused those blunders, if I could say so. But coming to our bowling, no one expected Nehra to perform so well as he did yesterday. I was actually thinking that Dhoni did a mistake by not picking Ashwin seeing the track spinning. But I guess Nehra lived more to his own expectations and he proved me wrong.

  6. @Phanish - Dhoni backed the team combination what is best suited for the wicket. We all see it as Ashwin did not play, but then Dhoni saw a complete fifth bowler in Yuvraj and hence he backed the fast bowler to reverse the ball in second innings. Best bowlers of the day were Left arm seamers. Should Dhoni be complemented for such a fantastic move, I think so yes. Nehra lived up to his own expectation, very rightly put by you. He is already a match winner for us in big tournaments, before even playing this world cup.

What I really like about this Indian think tank is not to bother about the people's sentiments in picking a player for the match. I am not saying dropping Ashwin was right. But then I am saying, Dhoni had the confidence that he had full two spinners in the team in form of Harbhajan and Yuvi. Credits to him and others, who made things work.

  7. Prashy, a very good blog buddy. One thing we should never forget is India as a team has matured and when it comes to handling pressure and fighting back they have done exceptionally well. Unlike what history speaks, India doesnt fail under pressure anymore. We might have learnt the lesson the hard way, but that gives the energy to play hard cricket.Dhoni's captaincy should be given due credit. Brave decisions with a very positive approach and a cool head.Thats the Secret Mantra for Dhoni and the Indian team.

  8. @Eash - Handling pressure can only come when you stay calm and this team has people at the top, who are all masters at shrugging off the pressure from their shoulders. Gary Kirsten, Dhoni, Sachin are leading the way and it has spilled on Yuvi who has become a high potential player for us winning the cup.

Dhoni is brave. He comes across as a guy who does his duty and let the result take its shape. He also comes across as a guy, who takes decision and makes it right.
